Clever tips and savvy strategies for packing, organizing and surviving moving day
Its moving season, and Americans are again facing the stress of packing their lives into boxes and hoping everything arrives in one piece. Whether theyre moving down the street or across the country, these individuals all face the same question at the outset Where do I start?
Plan to clear out excess clutter. Host a yard sale or donate unwanted items to a local nonprofit organization. Then plan to pack items you use the least first (i.e., out-of-season clothing, holiday décor, fine china and crystal, etc.), working your way to the most essential items (e.g., kitchen utensils, everyday decorations and appliances).
Gather the essentials new, strong moving boxes in a variety of shapes and sizes, bubble cushioning, packaging peanuts, professional-quality packaging tape and labels. It can be difficult to estimate how many supplies youll need and which boxes will work best for what items, so contact your local The UPS Store. Our packing experts can assess your needs and make a recommendation on what youll need and how much. Many locations offer moving kits that can be special-ordered for your specific need, and it takes only 1-3 days to ship boxes and

supplies either to the location or directly to your home. Once the packaging supplies are in hand, designate a spot for Packing Central where you will consistently keep your tape, boxes, paper, bubble cushioning, markers, etc. Place smaller items that youll need to take from room to room (e.g., tape, packing paper and markers) in a caddy for portability.
Keep like things together pots with pans, tablecloths with other linens. Label boxes clearly with color-coordinated labels, designating a color for each room. Then, place color labels on the doorways in the new house to provide a clear visual cue for where boxes go. Pack your boxes carefully and securely. A new moving box provides strength for the inevitable stacking as boxes are loaded and unloaded on moving day. Line boxes with at least two inches of packaging peanuts on all sides and use bubble cushioning to protect anything fragile. Use high-quality packaging tape on all seams (i.e., avoid masking, cellophane or duct tape).
