5 Interview Questions for Employers

Once you’ve chosen your top applicants, it can be difficult to determine the perfect candidate for your open position. In-person interviews are a great way to get to know your future employee and find out if they are the right fit for your company. But if you only have a 30 minute window – what are the best questions to ask to size up your applicant’s skills?

  • Question 1: What Are Your Top Skills? What Level of Experience Do You Have With Each Skill? Every interviewer asks: “What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses?” But by focusing on capabilities, you can get a true sense of the abilities your candidate possesses and how confident they feel with those skills.
  • Question 2: Describe a Situation Where You Worked on a Team. What Were the Challenges and How Did You Overcome Them? If a candidate is asked about teamwork, you can tell almost instantly if they thrive under collaborative environments, or if they shy away from group experiences. But every company needs team players, so make sure to identify the all-stars upfront!
  • Question 3: Given This Situation, How Would You Identify and Fix Problems? You want a problem solver on your team – someone who can find the best solution to any issue. Interview questions that highlight critical thinking in realistic situations can identify a top candidate that can face any challenge that may arise.
  • Question 4: Describe What You Currently Do. If You Could – What Would You Change To Make Your Current Job Process Better? Innovation can be a key component to growing your small business. In your interview, ask questions that identify potential employees that can find new and better ways to shake up the status quo.
  • Question 5: What is Your Personal Approach to Conflict? Conflict can make or break the work environment. While spirited discussions that produce better results should be encouraged, needless infighting should be avoided at all costs. It is important to find candidates who know when to speak their mind and when to simply go with the flow.
