How to prioritize your work/life balance

As a business owner, you naturally want your business to run successfully and make a profit to sustain your lifestyle, but how can you maintain a healthy work/life balance with a hectic work schedule? Ironically, spending valuable time outside of the office can help you be more productive with your business in the long run. Thus, you should embrace a healthy mixture of professional and personal activities for your continued success. Practicing good work habits can subsequently lead to a more productive life at home, as well.

Make an effort to leave on time

Your dedication to the job may prompt you to spend more time in the office than at home, which can lead to a burnout period or restlessness. In turn, your work or personal activities may become less effective, and the overall experience can become less enjoyable. Always strive to leave on time or even earlier, if possible, and keep work off your mind once you end your day. Depending on the nature of your work, you could compromise a few minutes of your lunchtime in order to accomplish a task that needs your attention or simply ask for help.

Set work devices aside until needed

For better or worse, we are constantly connected to the job thanks to smartphones and other technologies. As a small business owner, it can be difficult to stay away from daily work duties and avoid performing small tasks while watching television or spending time with family. Allow yourself some space and step away from optional tasks you may wish to work on after hours. This includes cutting back on communication with customers, except during emergency situations, or starting any job that does not require your immediate attention. Staying in touch with work-related updates is good practice, but not feeling consumed by every aspect of the job is just as important.

Rely on your staff during times of need

Whether you go on vacation or require a few personal days off, try to schedule your best staff during your absence. Remember the trust you have in them. Count on their effectiveness to get the job done without worrying that they may slack off because the boss is away. If you do not have any supervisors on staff, put one of your best employees in charge and inform everyone else of their temporary duties. Recognize the employee's effort with a monetary reward, an appropriate gift, or time off once you are able to resume your own work schedule.

Check your personal habits at the door

Some functions can be scheduled into your day, such as a company holiday or retirement party. Other functions, such as random happy hours and getting together with other employees on your day off, can sometimes be avoided. When you participate in these occasions, establish some boundaries and know when to call it a day. Likewise, try to avoid doing personal things at the office, as these activities can lead to decreased productivity and often require you to work later to complete tasks. Personal activities may include visiting social media websites or routinely checking your personal e-mail. There are emergencies every so often, but prioritizing nonessential activities only results in making your day longer.

As a small business owner, you should have more flexibility with the way you manage responsibilities, but you also need a proper work/life balance to be successful and not clash with one another. Not only will these practices help balance your professional and personal life, but you will also set a good example for those who work with you.
