Celebrate Small Business Owners Across America With A Small Biz Salute

In celebration of the Small Business Administration (SBA) annual National Small Business Week, The UPS Store is saluting small businesses all month long with #SmallBizSalute, an initiative celebrating small business owners in cities across the country. As an extension of The UPS Store commitment to the small business community, Small Biz Salute is a chance to take a moment to pause, recognize and celebrate small business owners, who do so much for our local communities and economies.

Small businesses are so important to our country that on April 29, the SBA received a proclamation from President Barack Obama proclaiming May 1 through May 7, 2016, as National Small Business Week. President Obama also called upon all Americans to recognize the contributions of small businesses to the competitiveness of the American economy with appropriate programs and activities.

We all know how inspiring it is to be recognized for hard work and that is why we are encouraging people to “salute” their favorite local small business owner by giving them a shout out on social media with #smallbizsalute. The goal is to celebrate and recognize local small business owners in our communities.

When thinking about small business owners and the many challenges they face, many assume that time and finances are at the top of their list. But in a new survey from The UPS Store, small business owners reported a concern about a different challenge: marketing their business.

One-third of small business owners surveyed by The UPS Store said marketing is their biggest business challenge, surpassing time, finances and people management. And it can be a tough challenge to crack. Marketing often is low on the budgetary totem pole, with the majority of respondents (77 percent) only able to spend a quarter of their budget or less on marketing.

But that doesn’t mean marketing is a challenge small business owners don’t think is worth taking on. In the same survey, 75 percent reported that they want to expand their marketing efforts, and more than half said marketing was high on their list of business priorities.

Today, tomorrow and all month long give a salute to your favorite local business; whether it be the restaurant you dine at, dry cleaners you see a few times a month or even your barber, be sure to show your appreciation this month. *The results of the survey are based on an online survey conducted March 25-30, 2016 by The UPS Store, Inc., franchisor of The UPS Store network, with small business owners.
