United Problem Solvers™: The UPS Store Ventures Into the Art of Book Publishing

At The UPS Store, United Problem Solvers isn’t just a slogan – it’s the way we work. Modern author, Brian Solis said in homage to the famous quote by Plato, “If necessity is the mother of invention, then vision is the father of innovation.” The UPS Store center owner, Mike Sklack, combined a little ingenuity with his existing print skills to help a customer who did not think the task at hand could be accomplished.

Dee McKay was a brand new customer when she came into The UPS Store location with a project she had been working on. She brought in pages of her children’s book that she wanted to assemble and print. Mike saw an opportunity to take Dee’s labor of love and give it the TLC that it deserved.

“It was the first time I’d ever worked on a book,” says Mike, “The pictures were all yellowed, but I looked at what she had and figured I could do it.”

Mike began working artfully to scan the sketches, reset the type and resize the layout. After reprinting and restoring the content, he put together a few drafts and stapled them together for review. When Dee first saw her book in print, “she was so pleased, it moved her to tears,” said Mike.

He completed the book with a glossy cover and saddle-stitch binding. “Once I was able to figure out the cover, I was able to apply this solution to all kinds of documents, programs and more,” he explained. “Knowing your printer’s capabilities can make your job a lot easier, which, in turn, helps you pursue more print jobs and try new things.”

Since the production of the first children’s book, Dee and Mike have worked together to create five additional children’s books. The six books combined have been distributed in gift shops spanning over a thousand miles from Pennsylvania to South Carolina. This transformative project not only built a great business relationship, it also touched all those who get to read and enjoy these books both now and in the time to come.
