7 Tips for Better Communication and Motivation as a Leader

Launching a small business can be challenging, especially if it is your first time taking this entrepreneurial step. Whether you are a solopreneur or you are managing a full staff in the pursuit of success, you are bound to make some mistakes along the way. While you look for ways to move your business forward, consider how your leadership skills impact the company as a whole. Here are seven tips for better communication and motivation as a leader.

1. Work in the same space

Instead of separating yourself from your team by taking a manager's office, you may want to consider creating an open layout in your workspace. By working in close proximity to your employees, you can make it clear that you want to hear their input throughout the day. This type of work environment also gives you an opportunity to observe what makes each of your team members tick, allowing you to gain a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses before you assign tasks.

2. Be quick to delegate

As a small business owner, you may often feel the urge to complete every task yourself. However, in order to avoid burnout and ensure that you are as successful as possible, you should take every opportunity to delegate work. After all, nothing motivates employees like giving them the opportunity to show their mastery of the industry while on the job. When one of your team members succeeds with more responsibility on his or her plate, you may want to consider that person as a potential manager candidate.

3. Put employee ideas into action

When one of your staff members presents you with an exciting, realistic idea on how to move your company forward, you should honor that idea by trying to put it into practice as soon as possible. Once your employees see this chain of events take place, they will become increasingly encouraged to submit additional ideas. 4. Offer feedback

5. Reward employees appropriately

As always, you need to strive to compensate your employees on an industry-appropriate level. Top-notch talent will only work at a start-up for so long, and you should anticipate and prepare for any ideas these employees have about moving somewhere else for better pay and benefits. Most importantly, you should communicate with these employees on how and when you plan to reward their hard work and dedication—with raises, upgraded benefits, or other perks—so that they know they are valued.

6. Keep meetings short

Most people start yawning at the mere idea of a company meeting, and much of that feeling comes from their previous experiences of attending long, dry meetings. In an effort to show your team that you value their time, you should try your best to keep meetings short and sweet. Create agendas that reiterate the direction you want to take, and try your best to keep everyone focused on those points.

7. Maintain a positive attitude

Keeping a positive attitude is one of the easiest and most effective ways to motivate your employees and keep things moving in your workplace. After all, stressful work environments can be draining for employees, leading to lower productivity and higher turnover rates.
