How to Kick your Small Business Stress

It’s no secret that most entrepreneurs eat, sleep and breathe their small businesses. From financial obligations to staffing to keeping customers happy, owning your own company is a 24/7 position, and for better or worse, most of the duties fall on your shoulders. All of that responsibility can take its toll, causing anxiety and stress in an attempt to do it all. In fact, according to a 2017 Small Business Owner Report produced by Bank of America, 41% of small business owners reported that managing their businesses was their top personal stress point. As you navigate the often stress-filled waters of small business ownership, it’s important to keep perspective and practice some self-care. If you are feeling the workplace pressure, here are a few quick tips for staying as stress-free as possible in the small business world:

  • Delegate: Despite what you may tell yourself, you can’t do it all. Or at the very least, you shouldn’t. Delegation is one of the strongest tools you have as a boss. Surround yourself and your business with people you trust, and allow them to take on tasks that will lighten your load.
  • Say “No”: This can be one of the toughest lessons to learn, especially when you are just getting your business off the ground. While it’s important to be open to opportunity, it is as equally important not to take on more than your business can handle. If you’re feeling stressed out by deadlines, obligations and demands, it’s time to pass on a few opportunities here and there.
  • Set Realistic Expectations: A lot of pressure can stem from good old-fashioned ambition. You’ve worked extremely hard to get where you are, and you want to ensure your business keeps growing. But whether it’s an increased revenue goal or a new product launch, setting too many lofty business goals can cause you to be overwhelmed and unfocused. Prioritize your most important goal and work toward achieving it before setting your sights on the next challenge.
  • Take a Step Back: Keeping things in perspective can be one of the most effective ways to de-stress. While your business is no doubt a major part of your life, it’s important not to allow it to eclipse your world completely. Make time to enjoy things outside the workplace (e.g., music, exercise and family) to keep your mind-set balanced and your stress in check.
  • Go off the Grid: The last step in ensuring your stress levels stay on track is taking time to unplug. In today’s day and age, it is all too easy to check emails at the dinner table or peek at your social media page one last time before bed. Blocking out time to disconnect and be present without your phone or computer will make you all the more refreshed, focused and motivated when you plug back in.
