How Should I Reopen My Business?

As a small business owner, you’ve likely asked yourself what things will look like for you in a post COVID-19 world. In fact, you have probably asked yourself several questions since many of the stay-at-home orders have begun. Will customers be back? Will your employees feel safe when they return to work? Is it really the right time to reopen? If you’re considering flipping that “Closed” sign to read “Open,” you should take a few things
into account first.

Is it the right time?

In an age so unprecedented, it is difficult to say when it will be the perfect time to reopen your doors. Whether you rely solely on the official orders of federal, state and city officials or you wait a while longer in hopes that case numbers drop further, you can never be totally sure the time is right. But by taking time to prepare your business, you stand a much better chance of doing well as we all face the next step together.

Some businesses that reopen may experience little change to demand based on the products or service they provide. However, others may find their current business model is no longer viable and in need of an overhaul to be better equipped for the world after the crisis. There may be reverberations we can’t predict that will have lasting effects, changing businesses temporarily — or forever. If your line of business requires a shift before reopening, allow yourself the flexibility to change things in ways that make sense for you. Think about ways to pivot your expertise into different revenue streams, or experiment with changes to what you sell, who you sell to and how you provide your services.

Are your customers ready to come back?

The end of the stay-at-home orders and the opening of businesses in your state won’t necessarily result in demand bouncing back. Consumers may not feel the same level of urgency to purchase a couch as they will to get a haircut when things begin to slowly turn around. While you may not be able to counter customers’ temporary apathy for certain services, you can create a space that is more attractive to store visitors when the world is on the other side of the crisis.

Let them know you are back. Use digital communication like Google Ads and emailing lists to spread the word that you are open and ready for their business once again. You should also consider ways to entice patronage, such as special deals only available to the first 50 people that visit during your grand reopening.

Create a clean environment. Instruct all team members to keep your store clean. Many consumers will breathe easier knowing anything they touch was thoroughly cleaned just moments before.

Encourage cleanliness from customers. Invest in disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer to make available to everyone who visits your store. Many post-COVID 19 customers will welcome any opportunity to get rid of germs and will feel more at ease as they navigate through your location.

While there may not be an exhaustive list of exactly what to do to before reopening your small business, implementing these steps can help you establish a more effective plan to return to work.
